French Original Linen Backed Advertising Poster. Whitworth Cycles. By PAL (Jean de Paleologue) Circa 1890s
This eye-catching two sheet poster is part of a series of images Jean de Paleologue did for Whitworth cycles. This image serves as a part of Whitworth’s history before becoming Rudge-Whitworth. In this particular image a gentleman seems to be busy explaining to a group of ladies how light his amazing Whitworth bicycle is, purely for scientific reasons. Although the brand Rudge-Whitworth did not continue after WWII, it did sponsor legendary long distance cyclist Billie Fleming. In 1938 Rudge-Whitworth helped Fleming cycle 365 days continuously to set the longest distance of 47, 642.5 km record for cycling in one year. This record still stood at her death, aged 100 in 2014. While some of the rights from the brand where acquired by Jaguar cars after WWII, you can still acquire this great poster and continue to celebrate the Whitworth legacy of light and strong bicycles.
